How to Dress Like Joan from Girlfriends: A Style Guide
Breaking Down Joan Clayton's Iconic Style
A month ago, a note I posted about the style of the main cast in Girlfriends blew up, and it got me thinking, people really love their style! But if someone wanted to dress like say, Joan, where should they start? What key elements define her style?
If you've ever wondered, wonder no more. Here’s a guide on how to dress like Joan from Girlfriends.
Now, while Joan was often dramatic (sometimes rightfully so) and found herself in some…interesting situations when it came to her friendships and romance (ahem), one thing she always got right was her wardrobe. All the ladies had great style but this guide is all about Joan because each character’s fashion was distinct and unique to their personality. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
Halterneck & Backless Tops
If you’re a fan of the show, you know Joan loved a good backless moment and hey, I'm not complaining! Business in the front, drama in the back (just like her life on Girlfriends). These pieces kept her looks classy and elegant, usually styled with minimal jewellery.
Elevated Basics
Joan’s casual outfits were never boring! She mastered the art of effortless style. Think silk camis and tank tops paired with camo pants or fitted knitwear that made her look polished but cozy. And let’s talk about that pink shirt with the baggy, rolled up pants and heels. Obsessed.
Asymmetrical and Cut-out Designs
My favourite part of her style was how she played with shapes! Even a subtle side cut-out could take her look from simple to chic. And that green dress? I had to pause and clap when it came on screen. Perfection.
Turtleneck & High-Neck Tops
As quick as she is to opt for backless tops, she also loved a good high-neckline. From cozy turtlenecks to stylish mock necks, these pieces elevated her outfits and added a sophisticated feel. Personally, I avoid turtlenecks because they make me feel like a tech start up founder, but Joan is almost convincing me to try again. Almost.
Statement Accessories
Joan often opted for her gold oversized hoop earrings but she wasn’t afraid to take it up a notch with statement accessories like a beaded choker. I just love this look! The choker paired with the blue dress and her hair down. So simple, so refined. Now I just need to find a shot where she’s not scolding someone in it. I forget who was getting a telling off in that scene.
There are more elements to her style I could talk about for days, and don’t even get me started on Toni, Lynn and Maya, each with their own je ne sais quoi. If you’d love a breakdown of their looks too, let me know!
